N.E.W. S.T.A.R.T.
Science
has shown that our health depends upon 2 factors:
Nutrition We
are what we eat. Need LIVE food. Disease,
hormones, antibiotics in animals Gen
1:29, 3:18
original diet = nuts, fruits, grains and vegetables. Fibre
is found only in plant foods, need it for the colon. Phytochemicals
in plant foods, prevent and fight cancer.
Health
is based on our immune system and good blood to nourish all our cells. Good
food lots of nutrients go into blood carried round to feed body organs,
give us clear minds and energy to do things. Bad food
toxins into blood stream diseased blood = system weak and tired
– brain is clogged, can't think straight. Even
with good food we need to be able to assimilate it properly: 1.
Chew slowly – starchy foods start digestion in the mouth. This
reminds us to spend time in the Word and really chew on it, think about
and question it, compare it line upon line. 2.
Have regular meal times Set
time aside for the Lord, preferrably 2 or 3 times a day to study and
commune with Him. 3.
Do not have too much variety, try not to mix fruit and vegetables at the
same meal -creates war in
the stomach. Do
not take on tto much, have a systematic study plan. Be open to the Lord
leading on this. 4.
Do not drink with the meal Do
not try and do other things when you are having your special time, that
will dilute the effect of what you are reading, and distract you from
the task in hand. 5.
Try at least 50% raw foods, no sugar and use good oil sparingly. 6.
Do not eat when worried, stressed or very tired. This
will change the chemical structure of the food.Cause Hyperacidity. Exercise
Good
to have regular exercise, walking 30 mins a day. Stimulates
and helps control appetite, aids digestion, aids circulation of blood
and lymph. Try
to elevate heart rate and sweat Reduces
blood pressure, improves muscle tone. Slows
down the aging process, restores Zest for life. Increases
the efficiency of the lungs. Walking
in fresh air is the best. Water 1.
Basic to balanced nutrition – breaks up, softens and transports
food particles. Blood is
90% water, need it to stay fluid in order to circulate nutrients. 2.
Controls body temperature – through perspiration. Moisture loss in a day is equal to 2 cups! (Just through the
skin) 3.
Lubricant – prevents friction between
joints and muscles, eyes. 4. Minimises
5.
Cleanses the system and helps rid the body of toxins Thirst
is an unreliable indicator of water need. Need
6-8 glasses of water
a day (1/2 pint glass) Drink
between meals, at least ½
hour before and 1-2 hours after. Clean
– need to wash
daily, skin brush Sunshine Without
sunlight all life would cease to exist It
is the plant world which captures this life-giving energy from the sun,
and by the process of photosynthesis converts it into the nutrients
humans and all living organisms need to sustain life. 1.
Exposure to light helps to set and maintain internal "body
clock" (circadian rhythm) =
essential for regulating hormones, sleep patterns, mood and appetite 2.
Help depression and fatigue 3.
Can reduce symptoms of "jet lag" 4.
Bible says sun has healing power Mal 4:2 Major
source of Vit D , formed in the skin and synthesised in the liver - used
in our system for essential functions -
Stimulates intestinal calcium absorption
Essential to calcium metabolism for strong bones
Synthesis of Vit D can alleviate rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes,
hypertension, seizure disorders and eczema 5.
Helps prevent cancer 6.
Lowers cholesterol 7.
Speeds up body's circulation enhancing elimination of toxins. 8.
Increases no. of white blood cells 9.
Promotes wound healing and kills many bacteria ( air sheets on
line) 10.
Calming pain killing effect on arthritis sufferers. Temperance Something
we are not something we do. Whole
lifestyle Definition:
Avoiding those things that are harmful and using in moderation those
things that are good Alcohol
Tobacco Tea
and Coffee
= poisonous drugs Work
habits, bed time, recreation Need
to be able to say “NO” Air 1.
Brain - 3lbs
-utilises enormous
quantities of glucose and
oxygen (compared to the rest of the body.) Consumes
20% of body’s oxygen and yet it is only 2% of the weight. 2.
Respiration increases during sleep (importance- sleeping with window
open) 3.
No air in room = FEEL
groggy, listless, fatigued, confused. 4.
BLOOD = a complex oxygen-transporting highway
-to nourish all cells (providing you have had enough water to
keep
the blood flowing freely!) 5.
Pollution, cigarette smoke, smog etc. passive smoking. Keep
the home as free from dust as possible
-as metallic pollutants collect on dust and can be a potential
health threat
to city-dwellers in particular (breath in 45lbs of poison in life
= sulphur
dioxide, carbon monoxide etc.) Our
body = 100 million million cells
25 million million transport oxygen Need
correct posture Breath
with stomach (get audience to stand up) Oxygen
can carry - or + ions
Sunshine and water work together to produce negative ions
(what
we need)
Receive extra energy, feel fresher and brighter, health
improves,
immune system gets stronger.
Good to walk in trees, near waterfalls and after rainstorm Surround
yourself with green plants, open windows. Otherwise
=
anxiety,
depression, headache, insomnia Rest DEEP
SLEEP in the hours before
midnight is when info learned during the day is transferred from
hippocampus area of brain (short-term memory bank) to permanent storage
area of the neocortex therefore
very important to the learning process. “Early
to bed, early to rise” 1.
How much ?
8-9 hrs sleep needed 2.
Regularity -helps the body establish regular bio-rhythms which
reduces
cancer risk and normalises hormone metabolism.
People who work night-shift or irregular hours are more
susceptible to
disease. 3.
Time
- 1 hour before midnight is worth 2 after. (more refreshed) 4.
Quality - affected by :
Food before bed
Lack of exercise/ Fresh air
Use of caffeine, drugs, stimulants
Stress, TV, harsh music, bright lights, seeing
violence/disturbing
images.
Holding negative emotions. 5.
Not just sleep, we need REST
one of the most beneficial ways to relax = to do vigorous
exercise.
Take a hot Bath
Sabbath rest - restores the mind’s communion with God.
Change - If work =
sedentary = need exercise, go for a walk
If labourer need mental stimulation = read a book
Rest from your cares, by helping someone else
Fatigue = a modern day problem 24hr
TV, radio and shops
Causes
of sleep deprivation Researchers
say: Late night TV
rotating shift work Long work hours
use of stimulants/dehydration Academic
pressures
late evening meals SABBATH Trust
in Divine Power TRUST
in the LORD with all thine heart and lean not unto thine own
understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct thy
paths. So
much of science depends on human wisdom, hence it is constantly
changing. We
have so much, YET we have: Stress Depression Fatigue Sadness Loneliness Discouragement ALL
leads to depressed immune system
= high blood pressure, heart attacks, osteoporosis, arthritis,
cancer etc. Medical
Study of elderly Christians stated “ We conclude that faith in God is
strongly associated with life satisfaction.” People
prayed for anonymously on a hospital ward, made a much better and
quicker recovery. Taste
and see that the Lord is good.
SUGAR..HOW
SWEET IT ISN’T “And
the cause which I knew not, I searched out” Job 29.16 Some
scary statistics.
That sugar has been directly and indirectly implicated in a host of
acute ailments and chronic diseases is beyond controversy. Eminent
research physician Dr. Edgar Howell says this: "Sugar is the
greatest scourge that has ever been / visited on man in the name of
food. I believe it should be outlawed as a poison." 1n
spite of overwhelming evidence, life seems to be getting
"sweeter" every day! In 1822, the average American ate 2
teaspoons of sugar a day. By 1870, life had sweetened to 11 teaspoons a
day! 1902 saw "doubly-sweet" people ingesting 22 teaspoons a
day. In the 1980's, our society had become super sweet - to the tune of
35 teaspoons a day! According to research gathered by Dr. Hans Diehl,
international lecturer and author of To Your Health, sugar consumption
today is somewhere around 42 teaspoons. That's
142 pounds a year for every man , woman, and child in this country!
Simply put: many people eat more than their weight in sugar every
year!." SUGAR-THE
REAL SCOOP According
to Dr. Agatha Thrash, preventative medicine specialist, pathologist, and
author of numerous books on health and nutrition: "The list of
physical and mental disorders related to sugar is formidable. Free
(refined) sugar has been shown to reduce the ability of white blood
cells to function properly, to aggravate heart disease, to reduce
life-span, and to contribute to alcoholism, mental illness, high blood
pressure, skin diseases, and enlarged liver and kidneys." Nutrition
for Vegetarians, p. 39. In
addition, according to Dr. Donald Davis, a chemist from The University
of California, rats fed on a diet of sugar and
processed foods developed a 50% greater appetite for sugar and an
18% greater craving for alcohol than a control group. Refined
carbohydrates and sugars have been robbed of chromium (important to
pancreatic function), manganese, iron, cobalt, copper, zinc, and
molybdenum. These are essential trace elements required for proper cell
metabolism and growth. (Ibid.) Furthermore,
not only is sugar addictive, causing food cravings, it also makes the
appetite control center go haywire! Studies show that addictive
substances such as sugar, caffeine, and alcohol produce a chemical
"rush" or reaction in the body that brings momentary pleasure.
Unfortunately there is a corresponding "low" which often
results in irritability, depression, fatigue, and a strong sensory
"desire" for that former "high." “Strip
seven pounds of sugar beets of their bulk, fibre, and nutrients, and you
get one pound of “pure” sugar!” P42 To Your Health By Dr Hans
Diehl . SUGAR
SLIP N SLIDE! In
their book, The Hidden Addiction, Janice Keller Phelps, M.D., and Alan
E. Nourse, M.D., discuss the addictive characteristic of sugar. Dr.
Phelps bases her conclusions on clinical work with more than 10,000 drug
addicts treated at her detoxification center in Seattle, Washington. Dr.
Phelps says: "All of the patients have two things in common: an
addiction to sugar and an underlying depression. They begin as
sugarholics and graduate to the drug of their choice - more sugar,
tobacco, caffeine, alcohol, prescribed drugs and street drugs." Dr.
Calvin Thrash, preventative medicine specialist and cardiologist,
explains the process in terms of brain chemistry. He says that when
stimulants such as sugar and caffeine are taken into the body, the brain
is stimulated to produce a hormone known as ACTH. This hormone
stimulates the adrenals which in turn causes hypersecretions of hormones
and visceral stimulation. In
short, the body is "charged" artificially and then
"drained" of energy, B vitamins, calcium, and trace elements.
In addition, the entire immune system is "knocked out" for a
period of time! Is that Snicker's break really worthwhile? THREE
STRIKES AND YOU’RE OUT! Here's
an eye-opener for sleepy readers: Simple sugars and refined
carbohydrates (white flour, noodles, processed, devitalized foods, etc.)
require little metabolism and enter the bloodstream rapidly. This is the
"lift" phase! But oh, the crash that follows! Strike One! The
pancreas, the organ that regulates how much insulin is released into the
blood, is "caught off guard" by the sudden surge of sugar.
Sensmg that it has more work to do than it really does, it releases too
much insulin. (Insulin processes starches and sugars to keep blood sugar
at an even level.) Strike Two! The result of all this chemical
"warfare" is a dramatic drop in blood sugar (usually within
the hour), and a resulting feeling of lethargy, mental confusion,
weakness, and false feelings of "hunger!" Strike Three! If it
could be worse, this has got to be it: Sugar causes weight gain, not
merely because of its caloric content, but because it actually alters
the metabolism, as well! What does this mean? Simply this: If
two groups of people are fed the exact same number of calories, but one
group takes its calories in sugar and refined products, while the other
group consumes the calories in the form of whole grains, fruits, nuts,
and vegetables, the sugar group will gain weight, while the other will
not. This finding comes to us from studies published by the U.S.
Department of Health. SNEAKY
SWEETS! Dr.
Diehl says that approximately 50% of the calories consumed by Americans
today are empty, non-nutritional calories. According to Dr. Diehl,
Americans today are overfed but undernourished. At
a Senate sub-committee meeting, Dr. Jean Mayer, who is president of
Tufts University, stated: "The enormous resources of advertising go
far toward the destruction of our more sensible (eating) habits." Just
how sugary is our society today? "Sugar is found nearly everywhere:
in canned soups, pot pies, TV dinners, even in bouillon. Consumer Union
found Hot Cocoa Mix to be 82 percent sugar; Coffeemate, 65 % ; Shake 'N
Bake Barbeque Style, 51 % ; Heinz Ketchup, 30 % ; Hamburger Helper, 23
%; Cool Whip, 21 % ; etc., etc., etc. And sugar by any other
name-sucrose, dextrose, glucose, lactose, maltose, fructose, honey, corn
syrup, and molasses is still sugar, calorie rich, nutrition poor, and
fattening." To Your Health, Dr. Hans Diehl, pp. 44-45. There
is even sugar in salt! It's hard to find a canned vegetable without it.
Based on the above facts, it's not surprising that soft drinks contain
an average of 16 teaspoons of sugar per can. As if that's not damaging
enough, consider that the average Amencan consumes an almost
unbelievable 547 sodas every year, according to the Beverage Marketing
Corporation. We're floating in sugar! “At
the foundation of addictive behavior is an imbalance in sugar digestion
and metabolism. I (have) learned that sugar addiction is the most
undiagnosed disease in medicine, and that it can shut down any system in
the body." Hidden Addiction, Janice Keller Phelps MD How
about a piece of chocolate cake? Fifteen teaspoons. One cup of frozen
yogurt? Twelve teaspoons. Jello, anyone? Brace yourself! It's 83 %
sugar! Do the kids love their cereals for breakfast? "Hidden inside
the average box of pre-sweetened cereal, cleverly disguised with
cartoons and special offers, is up to 1/2 pound of sugar. A two-ounce
serving of Kellogg's Honey Smacks hides 8 teaspoons of sugar; Apple
Jacks, Froot Loops, Sugar Golden Crisp and Boo Berry are more than 50%
sugar!" To Your Health p. 44. A
chocolate milk shake has a "mere" 10-12 teaspoons of sugar,
compared with a hot fudge sundae, which sports from 16-17 teaspoons.
Perhaps a nice, large sweet pickle will do instead. Not really - it has
soaked up more than 7 teaspoons! (Bowes and Church's Food Values of
Portions Commonly Used, l3th edition, 1980, Philadelphia.) SUGAR
BOMBS ARE KILLING THE ARMY OF THE IMMUNE SYSTEM What
is the effect of all this sugar intake on the ability of white blood
cells to destroy bacteria? It appears that the "sugar bombs"
are winning the war against white blood cells inside the human body.
How? Simple. One
healthy white blood cell is designed to kill 14 invading
"bugs," or pathogens, in its life cycle. Six teaspoons of
sugar reduce the
white blood cell's ability to fight these
pathogens by 25 % . That means it can
now kill only ten "bugs" in its lifetime. Twelve
teaspoons of sugar (less than one can of soda) reduces the
"killing"
capacity by 60 % . Now it can destroy only five pathogens. Eighteen
teaspoons (that's the content of one hot fudge sundae) weakens the
white blood cell by a dramatic 85 % . Now it can surround and
destroy only two invading bacteria. Twenty-four teaspoons of "sweet
times" robs the white blood cell of 92 % of its strength, leaving
it virtually powerless, able to destroy just one invader. In other
words, just two 12-ounce cans of soda, or a few bowls of cereal, will
effectively destroy 92 % of your ability to fight off disease for quite
some time! These foods should have a warning label on them! Imagine what
we're doing to our white blood cells with our average 42 teaspoons a
day! Obviously, the immune system is seriously compromised, and it
remains that way for a period of about 12 hours after each sugar-laced
meal. But just about the time that the weakened cells are gaining their
strength, most of us drop another "sugar bomb" on them!
Actually, most people are eating something sweet every two or three
hours all throughout the day! It is truly amazing that we do not see
more premature death and debilitating diseases than we do! “Sugar,
like cocaine, is a plant extract reduced to a chemical state of purity,
In the
bloodstream, sugar produces a brief high followed by a bottomed
out low. Sugar and cocaine both serve no purpose other than to produce a
pleasant sensation and yes, sugar can be addictive” Innovation May
1987. Mark
this: When the immune system is compromised by 92%, as in the case of
the person who consumes 24 teaspoons of sugar at one time (one piece of
pie and a soda), they are operating on the same level of
disease-fighting efficiency as an uncontrolled diabetic! Not only that,
when a simple sugar is "broken down" by the body, the results
are far different from what takes place with a complex carbohydrate. A
by-product of simple-sugar ingestion is a fatty acid, or a tri-glyceride.
That's right! Accordmg to Dr. Bruce Hyde, a person with elevated tri-glyceride
levels can many times find relief by simply reducing his or her refined
food intake! DON'T
DESTRROY YOUR DEFENSES! It
is this serious compromising of the white blood cells, according to Dr.
Bruce Hyde, that causes so many Americans to have such elevated blood
cell counts. When one white blood cell can only fight one pathogen,
rather than 14, the body must, of necessity, produce many more white
blood cells in order to attempt to fight the bacteria and pathogens that
invade the body daily. This
constant white blood cell production further weakens the body's real
disease fighting potential, and when a real crisis or trauma occurs that
demands vital energy and critical reserves the body is simply depleted.
It has “shot a lot of blanks," and there is no more "real
artillery" to handle the battle. The person becomes diseased and
debilitated primarily because of a chronically compromised immune
system. Sugar
gets a bludgeoning! According to research scientist Dr. John Yudkin,
sugar is implicated in obesity, diabetes, hyper-insulinism, high blood
pressure, duodenal ulcers, fatty livers, atherosclerosis, certain forms
of cancer, coronary and vascular disease, dental decay, gout,
dermatitis, and a shortened life-span. Furthermore,
"Sugar irritates mucous membranes and stimulates the flow of
gastric juice. Gallstones of cholesterol are common in people on refined
diets, but almost unknown in primitive tribes. Similarly, appendicitis
is almost unknown where refined foods are not eaten. The amount of sugar
in a small candy bar is found naturally in about three pounds of
apples." Nutrition for Vegetarians, Drs. Calvin and Agatha Thrash,
p. 41. NO
PRETENDERS PLEASE! This
brings us to the subject of artificial sweeteners. Are they safe?
Cyclamates have been shown
to produce birth defects in rats if taken our during pregnancy. Cancer
and infertility have also been associated with them. Saccharin
has been linked to bladder tumors, and Nutrasweet, processed with wood
alcohol, is equally questionable. NATURALLY
NICE SWEETS FOR ME, THANK-YOU! Where
does all this leave us? Unless you're Scottish and prefer your oat meal
plain with a dash of salt (which is really rather nice), hot cereal may
seem too plain to be palatable. Why not try some natural sweetners? Hot
cereal can be "dressed up" with bananas, dates,. raisins, and
fresh or frozen fruit. Or try unsweetened applesauce or sliced fruit in
sandwiches instead of jams or jellies. It doesn't take long for the
taste buds to become adjusted to naturally sweet foods. Let's
face it our tastebuds need to be re-educated to normal levels. NO
MATTER HOW YOU SLICE IT: SUGAR IS A BIG PIECE OF MANY LIVES! Some coomon
foods and their sweetness: Soda
Pop

Percent of the Amerian diet is made up of processed, concentrated
calories, devoid of vital nutrients and valuable fiber, that get you

percent of our daily calories.” Dr Hans Diehl “To Your Health”
Page 43. (Honey
has some nutrients, and doesn't enter the system as rapidly as other
sugars. See Proverbs 25:27.) THERE
IS HOPE It
is important to say here that it is never too late to change eating
habits and tastebuds! God is our "helper and our strength,"
and He will provide according to our petition! No one is too sunken in
bad habits for
the Saviour to retrieve It
is important at this point for us to remember a very important promise:
"He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might He
increaseth strength." Isaiah 40:29. This
scripture surely describes the condition of sugarholics! And what a
beautiful promise is attached! Strength is promised in God's Word for of
each day--"as thy days, so shall thy strength be." Deuteronomy
33:25. But
we must be careful not to presume upon God by robbing Him of the
strength and vitality He would be pleased to bless us with if we would
only adhere to the laws of life and health. The
apostle Paul recognized this principle, and exclaimed in surprise to the
Corinthians, "What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the
Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your
own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body,
and in your spirit, which are God's." I Corinthians 6:19-20. There
are mothers who have wondered and grieved over their offspring who have
grown up, only to be destroyed by a habit for strong drink or illicit
drugs. Many will discover in the day of judgement that their daily
dietary habits in those early years played a significant role. It
is important to remember that God is the Author of not only the Bible,
but also of all true science and natural law. And we need to do more
than remember we need to act by obeying those laws! Oh how much needless
suffering and misery would be avoided. TAKING A BITE OUT OF CRIME: “ A very interesting study was done at a prison in Tappahanock, VA. Noticing a severe increase in crime within his institution, the warden ordered that all foods and drinks containing refined sugars be banned from the prison. What was the result? Within a short time after "locking up" the sugar, the warden reported an 82 % decrease in assults, a 65 % drop in malicious horseplay, a 75 % reduction in theft, and a 55 % drop in refusal of in-mates to obey orders. Needless to say, sugar was one "felon" that never broke into that prison again!” Reported by Dr Agatha Thrash.
WATER
- FOR
THIRST AND MORE ! "Water
is the best liquid possible to cleanse the tissues. . . Drink some a
little time before or after the meal." Ellen G. White. Healthful
Living, 226 Whether
a person is sick or well, respiration is more free and easy if bathing
is practised. By it the
muscles become more flexible, the
body and mind are alike invigorated, the
intellect is made brighter, and
every faculty becomes livelier. The
bath is a soother of the nerves. It promotes general
perspiration, quickens
the circulation, overcomes
obstructions in the system, and acts
beneficially on the kidneys and the urinary organs. Bathing
helps the bowels, stomach, and liver, giving energy and new life to
each. It also promotes digestion, and instead of the system's being
weakened, it is strengthened. Instead of increasing the liability to
cold, a bath, properly taken, fortifies against cold, because the
circulation is improved, and the uterine organs, which are more or
less congested, are relieved, for the blood is brought to the surface,
and a more easy and regular flow of the blood through all the blood
vessels is obtained. Ellen G. White, Healthful Living, 228 But
whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never
thirst; but the water that I shalt give him shall be in him a well of
water springing up into everlasting life. Jn 4:14 Water,
the beverage that has been provided to satisfy the thirst of man and
animals, is one of heaven's choicest blessings. Its free use helps
supply the needs of the system, and aids in resisting disease. Pure,
soft, water should be used freely, inside and out. Water, so essential to life! Water,
composed of the two gases oxygen and hydrogen, is the medium in which
living cells live and function. Over two thirds of the human body is
composed of water in some form or other. A person weighing 150 pounds
has more than 100 pounds of water in his physical make-up! Next
to air, water is the most important substance needed by the body. It
is absolutely essential for the various organs,-- yes, for cells to
perform their various tasks. Water is so fluid and mobile it can
circulate through the tiniest of capillaries, and by the process of
osmosis even slip through a membrane. However,
to be a blessing to the system, water must be pure, and preferably
soft. Hard water may contain some minerals needed by the body, but
usually they are not the right ones, and being inorganic they are not
the best for the system. Phosphate of lime is the principal
constituent of bone tissue, but the main ingredient of hard water is
carbonate of lime. Hard water is more likely to contribute to liver
problems, and gall bladder or kidney stones. Organic minerals as
provided by plants are the body's preferred type of minerals. Water is the body's solvent, lubricant, regulator, and cleanser
The free use of water internally aids in the assimilation
of nutrients, in elimination of wastes and toxins, and in chemical
reactions so needful for life. Water is the solvent that keeps various
chemicals in solution that break down the food and prepare it for
absorption and use by the cells, or as hormones regulate chemical
responsive activities in the body, which are legion; it keeps
nutrients, chemicals, and waste matter in solution and floats them to
their destinations within the body. Blood
thickens if not enough water is taken. This hinders its free
circulation, adding an extra burden on the heart; and the kidneys,
lungs, and pores of the skin are hindered in their work. Thick blood
cannot adequately dissolve and remove toxic waste, so it accumulates
in the body all the way back to the cells, and the inside of the body
may become like a stagnant pool. Water, the chief ingredient of body
fluids, maintains them at the proper degree of dilution, when taken in
adequate amounts. It
is the lubricant of all moving parts It
regulates body temperature. All vital activities within the body
produce heat. Heat thus generated could destroy the vitality of some
tissues if it were not quickly dissipated. The evaporation of water
from the surface of the skin cools the body. A great amount of heat is
absorbed as water evaporates. Water
is a cleanser to keep the skin free from impurities thrown out through
the pores of the skin. Also it gives the body an "internal
bath," purifying the medium in which the cells live and work,
quickening their work.
Many
common ailments and conditions may develop when a deficiency in water
intake is continued over a period of time, such as:
